Disease Overview

In 2020, Ms. Chen was found to have a space-occupying lesion in her right lung during a physical examination. In May of the same year, a PET-CT scan revealed a nodule in the upper lobe of her right lung with increased metabolism, suggesting lung cancer. Immediately thereafter, she underwent "thoracoscopic lobectomy + mediastinal lymph node dissection" under general anesthesia. Postoperative pathology revealed invasive adenocarcinoma of the lung, and no genetic testing was performed. The patient underwent four cycles of chemotherapy after surgery, with the chemotherapy regimen consisting of pemetrexed and carboplatin. Additionally, she took oral Chinese medicine to further control the disease.

Genetic testing for lung cancer

With the successive identification of oncogenic driver genes in lung cancer, the classification of lung cancer has been further refined from a simple histopathological classification to a molecular classification based on driver genes. EGFR is commonly found in lung adenocarcinoma.

The EGFR gene is a type of gene that expresses epidermal growth factor receptors, promoting normal cell division and proliferation under physiological conditions. However, in some cases, mutated proto-oncogenes can lead to the development of tumors, with a higher incidence in non-smoking female lung adenocarcinoma. When it was discovered that EGFR mutations often occur in lung adenocarcinoma tumors, people began to consider how to inhibit tumor growth by targeting these mutations. Later, monoclonal antibodies against EGFR, commonly known as "targeted drugs," were developed. Typically, EGFR mutations make lung adenocarcinoma more sensitive to specific targeted drugs.

Ms. Chen underwent early postoperative staging for lung cancer and did not receive additional treatment. However, Ms. Chen remained uneasy. Through a friend's introduction, Ms. Chen and her family learned about Professor Zhang Minghui's NKT technology from Tsinghua University School of Medicine and carefully reviewed the demonstration cases of NKT cell therapy. She particularly wanted to try it to reduce the risk of tumor recurrence and delay the occurrence of recurrence/metastasis.
After reviewing Ms. Chen's medical records, Professor Zhang Minghui made the following analysis and judgment:
1. The patient underwent radical surgery for early-stage tumor detection through physical examination, and the postoperative staging was early.
2. The patient has not undergone genetic testing. It is recommended to perform genetic testing, and subsequent treatment should be guided based on the results of the genetic testing.
3. NKT therapy utilizes powerful immune cells to eliminate tumor cells that remain in the body and are undetectable, with essentially no side effects. It can be combined with other treatment options such as targeted drugs.

Ms. Chen decided to use NKT cell immunotherapy in December 2020. The initial plan was 1 course/month, and a total of 19 courses of continuous systemic treatment were carried out until May 2022. Multiple follow-up examinations did not show any obvious signs of progress..

From February 2021 to April 2022, the laboratory tests for CYFRA21-1, NSE, SCC, and CEA were all within the normal range. Follow-up is recommended.

Quality of Life

Ms. Chen's quality of life has been greatly improved. Her mental state is very good, and she feels more energetic and vigorous when doing things than before.

 Conclusion  s

After adopting the NKT cell therapy method, Ms. Chen achieved the expected results. After a long-term follow-up, the primary tumor did not show any signs of recurrence or metastasis, and the pulmonary nodules remained stable without any signs of canceration. At the same time, her quality of life improved.
